Milwaukee, WI - Willie L. Hines Jr. is currently out of a job after resigning as the Milwaukee Common Council president and his 15th District Aldermanic job at the end of January. Hines Jr. began working for the Housing Authority on February 3, but was taken off the job after the U.S. Department of Housing of Urban Development (HUD) Wisconsin Public Housing program refused to accept his hiring citing a conflict-of-interest issue and no good cause to grant Hines Jr. a waiver to be hired.
Hines Jr. has been out of a job since after February 3, and would have been making $120K a year with the Housing Authority.
Hines Jr. was the chairman of the city Housing Authority Board, but didn't set a resignation date from the board. He would have to wait until February 2015 to get hired. On Tuesday, the city Housing Authority requested again for HUD to grant a waiver from the conflict-of-interest policy that prevents Hines Jr. from taking the position with the Housing Authority. It will take about 30 to 60 days for HUD to decide whether Hines Jr. will be granted a waiver.
Hines Jr. as board chairman of the Housing Authority should have known of the conflict-of-interest policy before resigning from the Common Council.
Hines Jr. was briefly the new associate director for the city's Housing Authority.
