Nacozari, Sonora, Mexico - On Tuesday, the Sonora State Police Investigation Agency arrested eight members of a family, including a 15-year-old girl in connection with three murders. Several family members allegedly confessed of killing a woman and two children in multiple separate rituals involving sacrifice to the Santa Muerte (Narco Holy Death idol). The non-catholic saint La Santa Muerte is an idol worshipped by members of organized crime to keep them safe and to prevent police from busting them for illegal activities.
They were able to take investigators to where the victims bodies were buried. The victims were killed with a machete and then stabbed multiple times in the abdomen to drain blood from the bodies.
Mexican authorities identified the suspects as Silvia Meras Moreno, 44, the head of the family sect; Eduardo Sánchez, 37, her husband; Francisca Magdalena Barrón Meras, 21, aka, "Nena"; Georgina Guadalupe Barrón Meras, 20, aka, "Cookies"; Martín Barrón López, 48, her husband; Ramón Omar Palacios Meras, 28; Zoila Santacruz, his girlfriend and Yajaira, 15.
The victims were killed and their blood offered to the Santa Muerte, according to homicide investigators. The victims were identified as Jesús Octavio Martínez Yañez, 10, aka, "Tete," who was reported missing on March 6, 2012; Martín Ríos Chaparro, 10, disappeared on July 2010 and Clotilde Pacheco, 55, had been missing since September 2009.
