Milwaukee - On Sunday night, Frances Pizarro, 49, was fatally struck by a 41-year-old speeder at the 1400 block of W. Greenfield Ave. Pizarro and her son were crossing the street when the 41-year-old driver of a 1995 Chevy truck struck both Pizarro and her 20-year-old son just after 9:20 p.m. at a high velocity. Both victims were thrown across the street during the impact.
Pizarro died of multiple injuries and her son remains in serious condition, according to family members.
The driver at the time of the hit-and-run was fleeing eastbound on W. Greenfield Ave. from police at speeds of 80 to 100 miles per hour. Police were about a quarter mile behind him.
He didn't stop after both victims were hit. The suspect finally crashed at the 600 block of E. Greenfield, according to police. He then tried to escape by jumping into the Milwaukee Harbor. Police were able to get him out of the cold lake water and was taken into custody. He is facing a vehicular homicide charge, while driving with a revoked license.
State violation records show he had been previously charged with three drunk driving violations. Police haven't confirmed, if the suspect was driving under the influence of alcohol.
A business outdoor video surveillance camera captured some footage of the hit-and-run fatal incident. Police are reviewing the footage.
