Ruiz, Nayarit, Mexico - On Wednesday, Oscar Herrera, the Nayarit State Attorney General (PGR) reported that shortly after 4:40 p.m. residents in the municipality of Ruiz called state and federal authorities about a gun battle between two groups. The gun battle lasted almost an hour, but authorities arrived 20 minutes later when they received the first emergency 066 call.
The incident was sparked by a kidnapping of a man from Peña, a small town in the municipality of Túxpan by a group of men in three vehicles. The suspects fled to Ruiz when they were confronted and believed ambused by a rival group on federal highway 15 Tepic-Masatlán, which ignited the gun battle.
Authorities blocked portions of highway 15 near the 66 kilometer where the gun battle broke. Federal Police, the military, the Nayarit state police and municipal police responded, according to the PGR.
At least 29 members from rival drug cartels were confirmed dead. Most of the dead wore camouflage military type uniforms with bullet proof vests. Ten bodies were found around vehicles and 17 in a truck bed and spread out along the side of the highway.
Los Zetas, the Pacific Drug Cartel, Gulf Cartel and the Sinaloa Cartel have been feuding in the area for control in Nayarit. The Sinaloa Cartel has a strong following in Nayarit, according the Mexican Secretary of Defense (Sedena).
Fourteen vehicles used by the suspects were recovered, also high caliber weapons, two grenades and about 1,000 empty cartridges were found.
