Austin - State Representative Deborah "Debbie" Young Riddle (R-Tomball) is making headlines for proposing a harsh immigration House Bill 1202 with hefty fines, jail time and making it a crime for hiring illegal immigrants in Texas. Riddle's bill includes a two year prison penalty and fines up to $10,000 for employers who "intentionally, knowningly, and recklessly" hire illegal workers, CNN dot com reported.
The news maker item on the bill, it exempts Texans who hire illegal workers for domestic work such as maids, lawn caretakers or another houseworker, according to CNN.
In a Texas Tribune interview, Jon English, Riddle's chief of staff said, the exception was to avoid "stifling of the economic engine... and focusing on big business." Riddle doesn't think Texans should get punished for hiring lawn care companies who hire illegal workers, English explained.
Some House Republicans tend to argee with Riddle, as the issue unfolds and is creating debate, including an uproar for exempting some Texans who benefit from Illegals.
The Texas legislature convenes once every two years.
Riddle is a former president of the Texas Tea Party of Republican Women.
